This month's feature belongs to one of WCM, changing the NorCal Dub Scene's most dedicated members, Scott Echanis 2003 GTI 1.8T coming out of Sunnyvale, CA. Scott's car enthusiasm started back in the Honda days when he had a 1998 Honda Prelude, the first white one in the bay area. He had it for a few years and sold it after a damaged front end. I had a 2003 Jetta as my first car and Scott soon began to imagine what it'd be like to own a European car.

He hated 4 doors though so we wondered in the direction of a GTI. We knew his next car would be equipped with a turbo so we were only interested in the 1.8 liters. When it came down to the wire, it was between an Indigo Blue and a Reflex Silver one. The Indigo Blue was a better deal because of the mileage but the Reflex Silver one was closer and had leather--Reflex Silver it was!

The first mod we did on it was Joey modded lights. Then came the 17" Flik Wasps wrapped in BF Goodrich KDW2s. Next up was a Bilstein Strut/Shock combo put together with H&R Race springs. These were later replaced with H&R Coilovers. The H&R front 25mm sway, H&R rear 28mm sway, BFI c-pillar bar, and the .:R32 lower control arm bushings help it stay afloat on it's 4 wheels. After taking out a few reflectors and tossing dozens of sparks, we realized that the lower tie bar needed to be taken off as well as raising the front by an inch. Believe it or not, they can be spun down more! After a crazy "long" night of placing a short ram intake on, Scott's ride quickly gained the name "Hoover" by many.

Scott then chipped Hoover with the Giac X+ program and it became an awesome little silver bullet. He tossed on a HKS blow off valve in hopes that it would cooperate with his car. We were in luck. Then came the Diesel Geek race short shifter and the turbo timer equipped with a companion allowing him to let his car idle for x amount of seconds without the key in. When the engine turns off, the windows all roll up and it locks the car. Hoover will never get lost due to the Pioneer Avic D-1 navigation head unit that is hooked up to one 10" Soundstream subwoofer powered by a Kicker kx.1200.1 amp. Scott's more recent mods included the Boost Factory side mount intercooler that allows a more stealthy option to better air flow and a Samco turbo inlet pipe.

Scott lived a very fulfilling 27 years of his life. Cars were always a main priority and joy in life. He put up an amazing, long fight to cancer, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma 2B Nodular Sclerosis recurrent, for 2 years. On August 7th, 2006 at 7:14am Scott passed away. Scott was a fighter til' the very last minute. The last few months, Scott did an amazing job of living life to the fullest. After hours of chemo, he'd still find a way to be in touch with his Volkswagen family and find a way to make it out to all the meets, shows, and get togethers. He was very active in the Volkswagen scene and was totally an upbeat person. There wasn't one meet where he didn't talk to everyone at least once. No matter how bad he felt, he always made sure that I was there to accompany him to the events. Scott owned a dub knowing absolutely nothing 2 years ago and ended up knowing alot more than most.

He tried his best and gave it his 110% in everything he did. Scott is a WatercooledMilitia.com addict! I remember waking up at 5:30am, just to find Scott moderating, updating, and just typing away on the forum. Many people looked up to him as inspiration and a few as a role model. His main goals in life include becoming successful, have a positive impact on as many people as possible, unite the dub scene, and have a 13 second Volkswagen GTI 1.8T. Scott will always have a special place in our hearts and will NEVER be forgotten. I know he is pain free and living a life full of ecstasy upstairs. I'm sure he's up there waiting for us, with THE sickest dub starting off the scene better than ever. This one's for you babe.
