The begining of April brings us cheesy gags, an egg laying bunny, and this month's tire tucking '91 mk2 GTI. You might run into this car on the mean streets of San Fransico, chances are that you'll pass it up cause slow and low are the ways Dominik Mackowiak likes to cruz. The MK3 VR6 FK KonigSport coilovers (mounted on VR6 strut bearings) and 28mm Rear Sway Bar do a damn good job of helping Dom's GTI avoid every little bump and crack on the less then perfect California streets. While the 11" G-60 Brakes and rear disk conversion do a much better job at bringing the dropped hatch to a sudden hault. A Black Forest Industries rear stress bar keeps the back tight for quick lane changes and also brings a little bling to the seat-less rear cabin. The 195/50/15 Kumho 711 tires slapped on some 15x7.5 Brock B2's take care of the grip when needed.
Dom's GTI is powered by a 1.8 8v beefed up with a Schrick 272 cam, G-60 injectors, and VW Piolet Chip. The exhaust gases exscape through a Techtonics Tuning exhaust kit with a Borla muffler. Dominik ditched the A/C and powersteering and installed a manual steering rack. The close ratio 9A transmission and Techtonics Tuning short shift kit make shifting quick and easy for short burst of 8v fury. The Schrick oil pan has a great time battling speed bumps, pot holes, and driveways everywhere. These engine and tranny upgrades have made the car a lot more fun for Dom to drive, but he's kept them limited because of plans for doing a "big" swap in the near future.
The Exterior of the car is emaculate, considering the fact that this car is daily driven. The shaved Banana lights, rear emblem, rear body seams, and door moldings clean up the body, that is also fitted with G-60 Wheel arches. Dom even installed a hatch from a '92 GTI that includes a 3rd brake light wing. The single round badgeless grille and M3 style euro taillights finish off the outside of the car and flow with the smooth cleaned theme.
Moving into the car, '93 SLC seats take place of the stock seats and '91 GTI Rallye door panels give the interior a genuine vw feel. The carpeting has all been re-done in grey and the e-brake boot in leather. The original shift boot and knob have been traded for that out of a Lupo. Dom keeps his eye on the 140 mph 7k rpm cluster with orange painted needles to monitor his speed and shifts, and also keeps his hands and feet controlling the Momo steering wheel and pedals. The Kenwood Excelon cd player (lowered to center console) supplies the tracks and Kenwood 800x2 amplifier, Diamond Audio 12" sub, and Eclipse 5x7's supply the listening pleasure.
Insidious- "So how/why did you get involved in the euro scene"?
Dom- " My journey with the euro scene began back in March of 2003 when I bought my first car. It was a 1990 Audi Coupe Quattro and shortly after the purchase I got sucked into the scene of Audi's and Vw's. With the Audi being sluggish and lacking power comparing to the weight ratio, and parts being ridiculously expensive, I ditched the Coupe in favor of a 1991 Mark II. Now it is time to stay on top of keeping the car well maintained since the car is daily driven. Many times I had to give up the money I had saved for mods just to get it back on the road but that is one of the characteristics of Old Skool Vw's. They require as much money and love as our women".
